About
I'm Nico. Tāst is my side project.
It's an app for ranking the films, shows, books, music and podcasts you've actually got through. This site is its public half: the rankings everyone using Tāst has built together.
Here's the truth. This project has kept me sane during the most humbling job search of my career (which is still ongoing). Getting to fuss over details, obsess over metrics, has given my days more shape and meaning than I would have had otherwise.
How the rankings work
You rank things you've actually experienced against each other, and say whether you liked each one. That gives every title a score out of ten that belongs to you. This site pools everyone's scores, so the more people who rank something, the more its position reflects the crowd.
Any title with at least 3 rankings also carries a verdict. Consensus means people broadly agreed about it. Divisive means they split. The curve on an item page draws every individual ranking along the 1-10 axis.
Where the data comes from
Titles, cover art, credits and release years come from open catalogues and public directories:
- Film and TV from TMDB. This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB.
- Books from Open Library, an initiative of the Internet Archive.
- Music from MusicBrainz, with album art from the Cover Art Archive and artist photos from Wikimedia Commons.
- Podcasts from the Apple Podcasts directory.
